That Smile

This is my niece, Meredith, with her fabulous smile.

Meredith will turn eight in December, and we'll all be there to celebrate her remarkable life. This year is particularly remarkable, as she has now exceeded the life expectancy assigned to her when she was a baby. After an abrupt shortage of oxygen at birth, Meredith suffered a brain injury and was soon diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

My sister Julie has created a piece of writing called "What I Would Tell You". It is a love letter to parents who are only beginning the journey that she has been on: the journey of parenting a child with special needs. You can read it, in addition to other articles and weblog posts at www.whatiwouldtellyou.com

Please stop by her site and leave a little note to let her know you were there. Then pass it on to your child's teachers and educational assistants, to medical professionals you know, and to other parents. Julie's words have crossed the globe and touched the hearts of many parents who felt like they had no voice, and she has been overwhelmed by the feedback she is receiving.

She is currently at work on a book about her experiences. I'll keep you posted!

  2. I read Julie's letter a few weeks ago on fb and I'm sure it will stay with me always. Glad that your niece has such a strong mom and family to support her.
