queen-sized

When we got married, we used the money we received as gifts to buy a queen-sized sleigh-style bed. We luxuriated in the space and comfort of it. We're both tall and had been sleeping on tiny antique beds for years, so we loved that we could spread and stretch out to our hearts' (and bodies') content.

Little did we know that eight years later, we'd find this big old bed a bit, well...crowded.
Blessedly crowded, that is.

I've nursed every one of my children in this bed, gave birth to Margot in it, and hope to birth our next baby in it, too. We snuggle in for early morning sleep-ins, afternoon naps, and the occasional early evening rest. We read stories in this bed, coach little ones through bouts of the flu, warm our feet together, and tell long rambling tales of the dreams we had last night.

Our children now go to bed in their own room, and sleep through the night in their own beds. But this bed is our family bed.

Maybe we should have gone for a king-sized one...

  1. advice I give every newly married childless couple. Buy the biggest bed you can afford- you'll need it!

  3. Oh, how nice a queen-sized bed would be. It's such a luxury when we go away. Poor Colin in my antique double bed :)

  4. We have a family bed too!!! The first one was a queen, but we upgraded to the king. We only have one little one in bed with us I can't imagine more, but I guess you make it work, right?

  5. We don't co-sleep (with good reason, read on), but I'd still love a king-sized bed. My husband seems to take up SO MUCH of our queen! There's no way we could fit a little baby in there safely, so we have a co-sleeper (the kind that attaches to the side of the bed). But our bed will be a fun place to read books and tell stories as our boys get older... :)

  6. We have a queen as well. A king will not fit in the tiny bedrooms in our old house. The baby has never slept with us, but the two dogs and two cats find their way to bed with us and my feet usually hang off the side of the bed by morning. But I wouldn't change it for anything. I spent half of my bed rest reading in bed (the other half watching HGTV on the couch).

  7. Now there is a calculation I haven't done yet - how many years of bed-sharing there were. Hmmm. This could take some time.

    To family beds...

  8. Oh gosh, I could have written this exact post (minus the homebirth, though I had hoped we would have had more so that could have been the case but I digress). Needless to say, we'll be celebrating 10 years this August and so will our queen size bed! There have been so many times that I have wished we bought a king size, though the memories that this one holds are too dear to part with just yet! Maybe when the girls are a wee bit older! :)
