ReplyDeleteStrange...I commented earlier but now I see it isn't here. In a nutshell, there is much controversy about this film for many reasons. There are apparently a lot of inaccuracies in the film; one being that Joseph Kony is no longer in Uganda and has not been for six years. In fact, Uganda has been living in relative peace for the past six years. One of the concerns is that this small, not for profit agency has been overcome with donations and they do not have the experience or the solutions to deal with the 5+ million dollars that have come in since the film was released.It is very interesting....all of it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen so many people post about this video - some for it and some critical of it. For me, the bottom line is that even if this isn't the best charity to donate to, if it gets otherwise apathetic folks who don't give toward anything humanitarian to donate, investigate, and create awareness, then that's good. It may get some of us to look more closely at other organizations doing similar work where more of the money raised goes toward direct support services. I just think the dialogue around the issue is great for us as a culture.

This little video gave me hope in the strength of numbers of people doing something positive. Even if I don't plaster my town with Kony posters!
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched this video, only because we have satellite internet and a limit to what we can download. A 30 min video is not in the budget. But, I am familiar with Joseph Kony because of my connection with Ben Hoffman. Ben is a Canadian (and local) negotiator who tells his true story of his travels into the African bush to meet face to face with Joseph Kony in his book "Peace Guerilla".
ReplyDeleteNegotiators like Ben may be able to offer up some insights on how we as Canadians can contribute to the dialogue surrounding the abduction of child soldiers in countries like Uganda.

Oh, one more thing...there is a movie being made called "Girl Soldier" that will be directed by Will Rae. It's based on a book called "Stolen Angels" written by Kathy Cook. See: http://www.amazon.ca/Stolen-Angels-Kidnapped-Girls-Uganda/dp/0143054813
I've never read the book, but I hope to in the near future. It may be an important read for anyone who wants to get involved in this movement in some way.
